Trauma on Expeditions with Eoin Walker

Eoin Walker is the Pre-Hospital Lead for World Extreme Medicine and over the past year has worked in Cairo for the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) as a pre-hospital delegate to the Egyptian Government.

With an extensive experience teaching on our Jungle Medicine, Desert Medicine, Core Expedition Course and Trauma courses for over 10 years, Eoin is perfectly suited to discuss how to deal with trauma on expeditions.

He has since progressed through his BSc and MSc in Critical Care and has worked for various international Non-Government Organisations (INGOs) for the last 5 years. Eoin’s previous role was as an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner for London Ambulance Service in central London.

Session Overview

  • Examining the literature around commonly experienced traumatic injuries on expedition. We will then address the best empirical and anecdotal methods of dealing with the top three most experienced trauma pathologies on expedition.
  • We will examine the potential challenges faced when managing trauma on the expedition including leadership/team, communication, winning the environment, reassessment, rescuer fatigue, and casevac.
  • We will look at different methods of extraction from an environment using temporary stretchers and the most effective methods of casualty movement over the ground.
