WEM’s inaugural outing to Oman to run a new Desert Medicine course, working in partnership with OUTWARD BOUND OMAN, a highly skilled wilderness medical faculty with experience in the majority of the world’s deserts and a strong input from local Empty Quarter Crossing Beduin team and OBO Director Mark Evans MBE.
There can be nothing stronger than learning in the environment and our time in Oman was an amazing experience, both in terms of medical learning but also in experiencing the cathartic peace of sleeping under a canopy of stars each night.
Thank you to all that made it such an amazingly worthwhile experience.
WEM’s Desert Medicine team draw from extensive experience across the world’s deserts and will be sharing their knowledge and skills, giving you a comprehensive understanding of how to lead and provide medical cover on desert expeditions.
Mark Evans MBE brings incredible knowledge of exploration, especially in Oman with several desert crossings and a 1,700km solo kayak journey along Oman’s coastline. In 2011 Mark was awarded the MBE for his work using expeditions to promote intercultural understanding.
Sean Hudson MBE has been exploring and working in desert environments throughout his career, in 2016 he was the medical lead for first ever crossing of the Rub Al Khali, the largest sand desert on earth. In 2017 Sean was awarded the MBE for services to Providing Medical Aid and Education.
Over one-week Mark, Sean and the team will take you on a two-part expedition on foot, supported by vehicles and camels through Sharqiya Sands. The desert will be your home for the duration of the course with a brief stop midway for a shower and freshen up. You’ll learn how to overcome the obstacles of the desert and work with the environment to make the most of desert expeditions. The WEM team will guide you through what it takes to keep your expedition team healthy in a desert environment and deliver the clinical skills you will require should anything go wrong.
CPD Accreditation is offered through the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. We estimate 30 hours of CPD will be awarded for the complete course.
