What To Expect
Set against the backdrop of the historic Somerset countryside, our Veterinary Expeditions are your chance to become a part of the esteemed WEM alumni and Exped Vet networks.
On completion of the course, you’ll be poised to contribute to veterinary expeditions worldwide, respond to emergencies, and secure placements with charities and other organisations.
Over the course of two immersive days, dive into a dynamic learning environment where lectures and group activities are thoughtfully balanced to maximise engagement and learning.
In the evenings, you’ll have the chance to forge connections with fellow participants and attend thought-provoking guest lectures, enriching your experience beyond the classroom.
On the second day, you’ll put your newly acquired skills to the test in a realistic scenario. You’ll apply your expertise to locate, rescue, treat, and evacuate a simulated casualty, bringing together all that you’ve learned.
Guided by expert instructors, our meticulously crafted curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics essential for success in the field of Expedition Veterinary Medicine.
- Overview of veterinary expeditions & wilderness veterinary medicine
- Pre-expedition planning and legal considerations
- Human factors and mental health
- Public health and water purification
- Primary survey (MARCH vs ABC; RECOVER guidelines)
- Common conditions (K9, equine. livestock)
- Introduction to trauma in resource poor settings
- Adapting practice to resource poor settings
- Security and comms on expeditions
- Catastrophic bleeding, fracture management and veterinary wound care
- Veterinary kits and evacuation (including aeromedical rescue)
- Analgesia
- Veterinary medicine in different environments – hot, cold, tropical, altitude (K9, equine)
- Working dogs in conservation (including anti-poaching), mine detection, urban search and rescue
- Introduction to conservation medicine
- Working with other agencies, including medical teams
- Euthanasia in extreme environments
- Final exercise

Kit List
Unpredictable weather is common meaning poor kit preparation can be dangerous and could preclude you from activities. You will be outside for at least 4 hours each day, so please make sure to review our Expedition & Wilderness Kit List before arriving.
