Graduate Programs
delivered in partnership with the University of Lynchburg as part of their doctoral programmes in medical science and leadership.
A New Chapter in Extreme Medicine Education
World Extreme Medicine is proud to partner with the University of Lynchburg to provide advanced practicum opportunities for students enrolled in the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) and Doctor of Executive Leadership (DEL) programmes.
Through this collaboration, Lynchburg graduate students can now complete their practicum requirements by participating in select World Extreme Medicine courses, delivering clinical care training in some of the world’s most remote and challenging environments.
What This Means for Students
- Students can fulfil practicum requirements through WEM field courses (in place of Lynchburg intensives or mission trips)
- Gain real-world operational experience in disaster zones, jungle environments, polar regions, or even conflict-affected areas
- Learn from WEM’s international faculty and frontline medics delivering care in high-pressure settings
- Develop leadership, resilience, and decision-making under extreme conditions
How It Works
Students in the DMSc and DEL tracks now have three practicum pathway options:
-
Attend a WEM field course (e.g. Expedition & Wilderness Medicine, Polar Medicine, Humanitarian Medicine)
-
Join a Lynchburg humanitarian medical mission trip
-
Complete the week-long Disaster Medicine Intensive at Claytor Nature Center, Virginia
This flexibility allows students to select the pathway that best supports their career goals, interests, and schedule.
About the Programmes
The Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) prepares clinicians for leadership roles in advanced clinical practice, academia, and healthcare systems.
The Doctor of Executive Leadership (DEL) equips healthcare and business leaders with the tools to manage teams, systems, and strategic missions in high-pressure environments.
Now, both programmes embed real-world experience in austere medicine through WEM.
In Their Own Words
“Whether that’s in a polar environment, a jungle setting, Everest base camp… or even joining us here in Ukraine.”
— Mark Hannaford, Founder, World Extreme Medicine
The message introduces this landmark collaboration and offers insight into the kind of real-world learning WEM brings to the partnership.
