Hannaford & Weil Extreme Medicine Bursaries 2022

The Hannaford & Weil Extreme Medicine Bursary is for projects concluding in 2022/23 with research findings being presented at the 2023 World Extreme Medicine Conference. Included is a £5,000 research budget as well as travel accommodation to attend the conference, with the aim to provide you with funds to support research which pushes the boundaries of knowledge in extreme medicine.

Recipients of the Extreme Medicine Bursary will be required to submit their Conference presentation abstracts by 31st May 2023.

Open to all medical professionals and students, this is your opportunity to be able to inspire and inform others on a critical research project at the world’s leading extreme medicine conference.

Hannaford & Weil Extreme Medicine Bursaries Application Process

We invite initial proposals to be completed by 30th April 2022. To be considered we require a 60-secound audio or video pitch, explaining the key elements of your research project.

Once all initial applications have been reviewed, a shortlist of applicants will be asked to submit a detailed written proposal, providing critical evaluation of the project and the applicant’s ability to complete the research.

Who is eligible for the Hannaford & Weil Extreme Medicine Bursaries?

All medical professionals and students. There are no geographical or earnings limits for applicants, but weight will be given to applicants where shortage of funding stifles research and travel.

How do I apply?

We are asking applicants to send us a short audio pitch selling your research idea to World Extreme Medicine. Pitches should be no longer than one minute.

Those shortlisted will be asked to submit a more detailed, written proposal and provide a referee who can be contacted to provide a critical evaluation of the project and your ability to complete the research. At this point our Hannaford & Weil Extreme Medicine Bursaries committee reserve the right to ask applicants to present their proposals and answer questions via a zoom call.

Who will be the judges?

Professor Mark Hannaford, Dr Will Duffin, and three other Fellowship of Expedition & Wilderness Medicine Fellows.

When will I know?

Initial Audio pitches should be submitted by 30th April 2022.  Shortlisted applicants will be contacted following the initial review process.

What will be expected of me?

You will be expected to complete your research and submit your findings by 31st May 2023. You will be invited to attend the World Extreme Medicine Conference 2023 in person and present your findings.

How much will I be given?

Each Extreme Medicine Bursary has £5,000 to spend on research costs as well as travel to and accommodation at the World Extreme Medicine Conference. We will provide a free Conference pass. You will be expected to provide a full account of the monies spent and return any money not used.

When will I get the funds?

As part of your application, you will be expected to provide a detailed budget and funding timescale. Funds will be released in line with this agreed timescale.

General Conditions

  • All Extreme Medicine Bursaries are awarded at the discretion of World Extreme Medicine.
  • All funds must be used for the purposes set out in the application submitted.
  • Extreme Medicine Bursaries are not transferrable.
  • World Extreme Medicine reserves the right to withdraw or recall support art any time and with no reason.
  • World Extreme Medicine will not enter into any correspondence concerning unsuccessful application.
  • The awarding of Extreme Medicine Bursaries is a World Extreme Medicine’s sole discretion.

Ethics and risk assessments

  • World Extreme Medicine requires that all research projects be conducted in an ethical and responsible manner.
  • Where no third-party health and safety approval is requires World Extreme Medicine requires applicants to show sufficient planning for safety.
  • World Extreme Medicine reserves the right to withhold funding where it deems the ethical and safety risk planning inadequate. Any decision to do so is at World Extreme Medicine’s sole discretion.

Changes of Plan

  • Any changes to the research plan should be discussed with World Extreme Medicine immediately, whilst changes may be accommodated World Extreme Medicine reserves the right to withdraw funding in these changes are substantial.
  • Any funds not spent on relevant expenses must be returned to World Extreme Medicine.

Insurance

  • Successful applicants must ensure that they have all appropriate insurance.
  • World Extreme Medicine will not provide additional funds to cover insurance requirements.

Reporting and Acknowledgement

  • Successful applicant must keep the World Extreme Medicine Bursaries team informed of their progress on a monthly basis.
  • A full report must be submitted by 31st May 2023 and presented at the 2023 World Extreme Medicine Conference.
  • World Extreme Medicine reserves the right to publish the results of the research in its journals and online.
  • If the research is published independently then this must be agreed, in advance, with World Extreme Medicine and World Extreme Medicine’s support acknowledged.
