Humanitarian Medicine Course

Humanitarian Medicine Course UK

Northampton, UK

23 March 2026 08:00 - 26 March 2026 16:00

Intensive 4-day training in humanitarian and disaster medicine, equipping you with life-saving skills to make a difference worldwide.

Humanitarian medicine is practised in complex, resource-limited environments where systems are disrupted, needs are high, and decisions carry real consequences.

This four-day Humanitarian Medicine course focuses on the clinical, public health, and operational realities of working in humanitarian and disaster settings. You’ll explore how healthcare is delivered in conflict zones, refugee camps, disaster responses, and fragile health systems, where standard clinical pathways often don’t apply.

Through expert-led teaching grounded in real deployments, you’ll develop the knowledge, judgement, and contextual awareness needed to adapt your practice, work safely within humanitarian structures, and contribute effectively as part of a wider response.

The principles covered on this course are directly applicable to global health work, humanitarian deployments, and emergency care in underserved or high-pressure environments, both internationally and closer to home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course right for me?

This course is designed for healthcare professionals and students who want to understand and apply humanitarian and disaster medicine principles in real-world settings. It’s well suited to those exploring humanitarian deployments, global health work, disaster response, or anyone who wants to strengthen their ability to deliver care in disrupted, resource-limited environments.

You don’t need previous humanitarian experience, just curiosity, professionalism, and a willingness to engage with complex decision-making.

Do I need previous humanitarian medicine training?

No. This course is structured as a clear, supported introduction to humanitarian and disaster medicine. If you’ve completed a Humanitarian Medicine Course (or similar), you may recognise some planning and resource-limited thinking, but it’s not a requirement.

If you’re unsure whether it’s the right next step for you, we recommend using the Course Fit Checker or booking a discovery call.

What level of fitness is required?

You don’t need to be an elite athlete. This is a venue-based course with classroom teaching and workshops. A good level of general fitness is helpful, especially if any short outdoor sessions are included, but the focus is on learning, judgement, and practical application rather than physical performance.

What kit do I need to bring?

Please follow the kit guidance and bring adequate kit. While this course is primarily classroom-based, you should be prepared for moving between buildings, potential short outdoor sessions, and typical UK spring weather.

As a minimum we recommend you bring:

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Warm layers (mid-layer, fleece, or similar)

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for full training days

  • Sturdy footwear (trainers are fine, walking shoes or boots if you prefer)

  • A small day bag for personal items

  • 1 litre water bottle

  • Personal medications

  • Toiletries

  • Notebook, pen, and any preferred learning aids

Important: Prepare ahead of time. Having the right kit keeps you comfortable, focused, and ready for anything included in the programme.

Do I need specialist equipment?

No specialist equipment is required for this course. Any teaching resources, workshop materials, or equipment used during sessions will be provided by the faculty team.

Where will we be staying?

The course is hosted at Sedgebrook Hall, Northampton, and accommodation is included as part of your booking. Meals are also included during the course, which helps you stay on-site and get the most from the programme, including informal discussions and networking outside scheduled teaching.

Plan to arrive by the morning of 23 March 2026. Registration opens at 08:00 on Day 1. The course concludes by 16:00 on 26 March, so you can depart that evening. If you are traveling from outside the UK, we strongly recommend arranging appropriate travel and health insurance for your trip, we also recommend checking if you require a UK visa to enter the country.

Participants are responsible for their own travel to/from the venue. You should also budget for any personal expenses such as travel insurance, any extra nights of lodging beyond the course dates, bar drinks, and personal equipment or gear you might need for the outdoor elements of the training.

What are the conditions like?

This is an indoor, venue-based course. Conditions are comfortable and structured, with teaching delivered in a professional learning environment. If any sessions include stepping outside briefly, it will be straightforward and designed to support learning, not to test endurance.

Do I need travel insurance to attend?

If you are travelling from outside the UK, we strongly recommend arranging appropriate travel insurance, including health cover, for your trip. If you are travelling within the UK, insurance is still a good idea, but not mandatory in the same way as expedition-based courses.

What support is available before the course starts?

Ahead of the course, you’ll receive joining information to help you plan travel, arrival, and what to expect on the day. If a WhatsApp group is used for this course, we’ll share access details closer to the start date so you can connect with the cohort, ask questions, and coordinate plans.

If you have questions at any stage, the team is happy to help.
