D & V – even though doctors will talk about anything, diarrhoea and vomiting, or gastrointestinal upset, can be a neglected subject in expedition and event medicine. However, it can have a disastrous impact on individuals, on resources, and on an expedition as a whole, making preventative medicine crucial.
This session will give an overview of the causes and impacts on GI illness on expeditions. It will contrast 2-3 case studies of health and hygiene on ultra-marathon events, focusing on strategies employed to prevent vomiting or diarrhoeal illness or to mitigate an outbreak. Viewers will come away with a well rounded understanding of the risk factors involved and how to prevent and manage vomiting or diarrhoeal illness on their expeditions.
