For World Mental Health Day, we asked the WEM family and community to share their experiences, advice, and recommendations, with the goal of creating a resource that supports medics whenever they need it most.

Here you’ll find mantras, services, and words of encouragement gathered from people working in extreme and everyday environments. It’s a reminder that while challenges are real, poor mental health is not inevitable, and that together, we can help one another look after ourselves… as well as those we care for.

If you can’t sleep, shower. If you can’t shower, sleep. Find the glimmers. In every situation there is something to be found — the kindness of another person, or a nice view. Ground yourself. Breathe slow and steady. Talk. Tell your friends when you appreciate them, when you love them, when they helped. Value them and return the favour.

You’re not alone. Take care of yourself first, and everything else will start to fall into place. You’ve survived every challenge you’ve faced so far and each one has made you stronger.

Everything will be alright in the end. If it’s not alright, it’s not the end.

ADVICE FROM EXPERIENCE

Contributors

This resource was made possible thanks to the time, honesty, and generosity of the WEM community, including:

Harishankar Muthenahalli, Ava, Sarah Spelsberg MD, Karen O’Neill, Dr. Shireen Kumar, Dr Rebecca Ryell GP
and countless others across the WEM network who shared their experiences, reflections, and advice.

Your words continue to remind us that even in the most demanding environments, compassion, for ourselves and each other, is what keeps us grounded.

Keep the Conversation Going

Resources like this can only stay meaningful when they grow with the people who use them. If you’d like to add your voice, contribute advice, or recommend a service, we’d love to hear from you. Every message helps another medic feel a little less alone.
