Advancing the Field Through Research
One of the most exciting developments this year was the outstanding quality and quantity of research posters. The depth and breadth of the submissions were truly remarkable, showcasing groundbreaking work that’s actively advancing the field of extreme medicine. This growing academic foundation is crucial for our community’s future, providing the evidence base that will shape practice in extreme environments for years to come.

A Historic Milestone: The World Extreme Medicine Fund
The launch of the World Extreme Medicine Fund (WEMF) marks a pivotal moment in our journey. Born from our incredibly successful Medics4Ukraine initiative, which delivered £3.5m in critical aid, WEMF represents our commitment to expanding rapid-response medical support worldwide. From Ukraine to Myanmar, we’re now positioned to bring vital medical aid to communities in crisis whenever and wherever it’s needed most.
This initiative, alongside our established conference and educational programs, creates a powerful legacy that will continue to impact lives long into the future. We’re not just sharing knowledge anymore – we’re actively changing outcomes in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Breaking Barriers and Making History
The closing keynote by Jasmin Paris was nothing short of inspirational. After three attempts, she didn’t just complete the ‘impossible’ Barkley Marathon – she rewrote history as the first woman to conquer it. Her story perfectly encapsulates the spirit of extreme medicine: persistence, determination, and the unwavering belief that barriers are meant to be broken.
A Galaxy of Extraordinary Speakers
The breadth and depth of expertise at WEM24 was truly astronomical. NASA Astronaut physician Kjell Lindgren transported us beyond Earth’s atmosphere, sharing insights from space medicine that could revolutionise how we think about healthcare in extreme environments. Adam Gent brought us back to earth with practical wisdom that had us all in stitches, while never losing sight of the serious lessons being conveyed.
Jan Becker’s remarkable journey from Papua New Guinea’s jungles to revolutionising maternal health in Tanzania demonstrated how helicopter business acumen can transform into humanitarian impact. It’s these unexpected intersections of expertise that make The World Extreme Medicine Conference such a unique gathering.
The practical sessions were equally compelling. Ben Lyon’s Royal Marines IED trauma simulations delivered intense, realistic training that pushed participants to their limits. Paula Reid opened our minds to the psychological dimensions of extreme environments, while Jørgen Melau’s insights into cold operations left us with practical knowledge that could save lives in the harshest conditions.
Niall McCann completely redefined our understanding of what’s possible in extreme adventure, while Shawna Pandya and Sarah Spelsberg brought cutting-edge perspectives on wilderness medicine. The maritime medicine insights from Liz Baugh and the humanitarian experience shared by Ross Hemingway added crucial dimensions to our understanding of medical practice in challenging environments.
What made these presentations particularly special was not just their individual brilliance, but how they wove together to create a comprehensive tapestry of extreme medicine. From the depths of the ocean to the vastness of space, from frozen Arctic wastes to sweltering jungle environments, every aspect of medical practice in extreme conditions was explored with depth and rigor.
Building a Lasting Legacy
What made WEM24 truly special is how it represents the evolution of our mission. We’ve grown from a conference into a movement, from a gathering of like-minded professionals into a force for change in global healthcare. The combination of our annual conference, the newly launched World Extreme Medicine Fund, and our growing research presence creates a powerful platform for positive change in extreme medicine.
Looking Ahead to WEM25
The success of WEM24 has set an incredibly high bar, but it has also filled us with excitement for what’s to come. The passion, expertise, and dedication demonstrated by our speakers, contributors, and attendees have shown us that the future of extreme medicine is brighter than ever.
To our remarkable team who made this event possible – your tireless dedication has created something truly extraordinary.
As we look forward to WEM25, I invite you all to continue this journey with us. Whether you’re a seasoned extreme medicine practitioner or just beginning to explore this fascinating field, there’s a place for you in our community. Together, we’re not just advancing a field of medicine – we’re creating a legacy that will impact lives around the world.
