Frequently Asked Questions
Is this course right for you?
This course is designed for healthcare professionals and healthcare students who want to apply their clinical skills to diving and expedition environments.
It is particularly suited to those interested in providing medical cover for dive teams, marine expeditions, research projects, or remote aquatic environments, and for clinicians looking to develop confidence managing dive-related emergencies away from immediate specialist care.
Do I need previous experience?
You must hold PADI Open Water certification (or equivalent) and have a minimum of 10 logged dives prior to attending the course.
You do not need previous expedition experience, but you should be comfortable diving, working as part of a team, and operating in simple, remote living conditions.
If you’re unsure whether your experience is suitable, please get in touch with the team and we’ll be happy to advise.
What level of fitness is required?
A moderate level of fitness is required. You’ll be diving most days and living in a basic island camp environment with limited facilities.
You should be comfortable carrying personal kit, boarding dive boats, and spending extended periods outdoors in warm conditions.
What does the course cover?
This course focuses on the practical application of dive and expedition medicine in a real-world, remote island setting. Teaching is delivered through a combination of classroom sessions, in-water dives, and beach-based scenarios, with a strong emphasis on decision-making and care in resource-limited environments.
Across the six days, course content includes:
• Recognition and management of decompression illness (DCI) and barotrauma
• Neurological assessment and dive-related emergency decision-making
• Management of marine envenomation and hazardous marine life injuries
• Drowning and hypothermia in diving and expedition contexts
• Oxygen delivery, emergency response planning and evacuation considerations
• Common expedition injuries and illness in marine environments
• Working effectively within a marine expedition team, including risk assessment, kit planning and roles
Teaching takes place both on land and in the water, allowing you to apply clinical concepts directly to diving scenarios in the same conditions you may encounter while providing medical cover on expedition.
