Develop your field skills and knowledge to enhance your Extreme Medicine skill set. 

This four-day Expedition Skills course in North Wales takes you into the mountains for a multi-day experience designed to build your outdoor proficiency.

Set in the hills around Cadair Idris in Southern Eryri (Snowdonia), you’ll develop fieldcraft, kit knowledge, and outdoor leadership in an environment known for delivering all four seasons in a single day.

Over four days, our expert team will guide you towards greater independence, adaptability, and confidence in the outdoors. You’ll learn practical, hard-earned techniques used by professionals, leaving you better prepared for remote environments, whether supporting a casevac in the field or working within a search and rescue team.

Is this course right for me?

This course is designed for all medics, healthcare professionals, and first responders who want to develop their outdoor skills. Whether you’re a day trekker or have never spent a night out wild camping or an event medic looking to take steps into more extreme settings, this course will support you on that journey.

Do I need previous expedition or wilderness medicine experience or training?

No – you just need the right kit, an open mind and a positive attitude.

What level of fitness is required?

You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but a moderate level of fitness is required for the course. We will walk at a steady group trekking pace (typically 2-3 miles per hour) over rugged terrain, carrying all of our kit. You can expect to be on your feet for at least 5-7 hours per day.

What course content is covered?

This Expedition Skills course is designed to develop your outdoor proficiency.

Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, practical workshops, and scenario-based learning.

What kit do I need to bring?

Please follow the kit list below and bring adequate kit. Weather in the North Wales can be highly unpredictable, and poor kit preparation can impact your safety and participation.

We recommend you bring:

  • Waterproof trekking boots
  • Trekking socks
  • Lightweight trekking trousers / leggings
  • Lightweight trekking shorts (optional)
  • Lightweight trekking t-shirt
  • Lightweight fleece (1/2 or full zip)
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Synthetic insulated jacket (down is not advised)
  • Liner gloves
  • Fleece gloves
  • Waterproof glove or mitt
  • Buff
  • Beanie/hat
  • Sleeping mat/pad
  • Sleeping bag – synthetic 3 season recommended (adjust to your own needs)
  • Bivy bag / 1 person tent
  • Camping Stove – any kind
  • Fuels – can be sourced locally if travelling internationally
  • Cooking pot
  • Eating container (mess tin)
  • Long handed spoon
  • Ration packs / expedition food (4 breakfast, 4 lunch, 3 dinner)
  • Snacks
  • Wide mouth drinking bottle (min 1 x 1l Nalgene)
  • Personal water treatment (filtration and chemical disinfection)
  • Headtorch and spare batteries
  • Baseplate compass (Silva expedition 4, or similar)
  • Powerbank
  • Small emergency shelter (2-4 person)

Important: Never leave kit preparation until the last minute. Preparing well in advance will help you stay comfortable, safe, and focused on learning throughout the course.

Where will we be staying?

For the night of arrival, and night 1 of the course, you will be staying at Kings Youth Hostel, Night 2 and 3 you will be wild camping. If driving to the course, parking is included at Hafod Dywyll Campsite.

What are the conditions like?

In mid-September, southern Snowdonia is usually mild but changeable. Daytime temperatures average 16–18 °C, with cooler nights around 10–11 °C. Rain is fairly common, skies are often partly cloudy, and it can be breezy, especially in higher or exposed areas.

However, come prepared for colder, challenging conditions. The weather can be unpredictable.

Do I need travel insurance to attend?

Not if you are resident in the UK, those travelling from overseas should have the relevant travel insurance cover.

What support is available before the course starts?

Ahead of the course, you’ll receive access to a WhatsApp group where you can ask questions, share travel plans, and connect with fellow participants and faculty. Joining instructions and optional pre-course resources are also provided upon booking.
