Human Factors in Medicine Course
Dartmoor, UK
Lead, decide, and work effectively under pressure.
Clinical knowledge alone isn’t enough when environments are unpredictable, information is incomplete, and teams are operating under stress.
This three-day Human Factors in Medicine course on Dartmoor explores how people, communication, leadership, and decision-making shape outcomes in challenging medical environments. Set away from traditional classrooms, the course uses realistic, field-based scenarios to examine how individuals and teams perform when plans change, fatigue builds, and pressure increases.
Through a carefully designed mix of experiential learning, facilitated reflection, and structured debrief, you’ll develop greater self-awareness and practical tools to improve how you lead, communicate, and function within teams — whether that’s in expedition medicine, disaster response, humanitarian settings, or everyday clinical practice.
Due to the experiential nature of this course, we do not provide a detailed timetable in advance, the course content is designed to be adaptive and may vary based on group dynamics and weather conditions.

What's Included?
Field-Based Experiential Learning
Learning takes place through realistic, scenario-driven activities conducted both indoors and outdoors. You’ll be placed in unfamiliar situations designed to test communication, leadership, and team performance, allowing theory to be explored through lived experience rather than lectures alone.
Expert Faculty & Facilitated Debrief
Faculty guide learning throughout the course, with structured debrief sessions forming a core component. These reflective discussions provide space to explore individual and team behaviours, decision-making processes, and performance under pressure.
Accommodation, Meals & Course Support
Your course fee includes accommodation and meals for the duration of the course, allowing you to fully focus on learning. The course is fully residential, with accommodation provided from Monday evening through to Thursday afternoon.
Course Certification & SDI Assessment
On completion, you’ll receive a certificate of attendance recognising your participation in Human Factors training within challenging, real-world environments. As part of the course, you’ll complete the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI), a psychometric model that explores how you prefer to work in relation to results, relationships, and processes. This valuable tool will provide insights into your behaviour during both optimal conditions and under pressure.
