Discover the Next Frontier in Medicine

Space medicine sits at the intersection of extreme physiology, remote healthcare, and human performance under pressure. From microgravity aboard the International Space Station to future lunar and Mars missions, it presents some of the most complex medical challenges faced by humans.

This in-person course offers a rare opportunity to explore the real-world practice of space and aerospace medicine, learning directly from astronauts, physicians, engineers, and explorers working at the cutting edge of human spaceflight.

Over four intensive days, you’ll examine how the human body adapts to space, how medical care is delivered when evacuation is impossible, and how lessons from space medicine translate directly back to extreme, remote, and austere care on Earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course right for you?

This course is designed for healthcare professionals and students who are interested in understanding how medicine is practised in extreme, remote, and high-performance environments.

It is particularly suited to those curious about aerospace medicine, human performance, extreme physiology, and the future of medical care in space and other isolated settings.

No prior experience in space or aviation medicine is required.

Who typically attends this course?

Past attendees have included doctors, paramedics, nurses, medical students, engineers, researchers, and professionals working in extreme or remote environments.

The course attracts a broad, international cohort, creating a multidisciplinary learning environment where clinical, engineering, and operational perspectives intersect.

What does the course content cover?

The Space Medicine Course explores how the human body responds to spaceflight and extreme environments, and how medical care is delivered when resources, gravity, and evacuation options are limited.

Course content includes:

  • Human adaptation to microgravity and spaceflight physiology

  • Acute and long-term health effects of microgravity

  • Psychological stressors, isolation, confinement, and team dynamics

  • Medical risk, prevention, and mitigation strategies in space

  • Constraints on diagnosis, treatment, and evacuation beyond Earth

  • Spacecraft habitability and environmental health considerations

  • Managing inflight medical events and emergencies

  • Sex and gender differences in space medicine and risk profiles

  • The future of commercial spaceflight and exploration medicine

Teaching is delivered through expert-led lectures, discussion, and real-world case examples drawn directly from spaceflight experience.

How is the course taught?

The course is delivered in person through a mix of lectures, facilitated discussions, and interactive sessions.

Rather than simulation-heavy or technical skills training, the focus is on understanding principles, decision-making, and real-world constraints, grounded in lived experience from astronauts and space medicine professionals.

Do I need a medical background to attend?

While the course is medically focused, you do not need to be a qualified clinician to attend.

Non-clinical professionals with a strong interest in space, human performance, engineering, or exploration medicine are welcome, provided they are comfortable engaging with medical and physiological concepts.

Where will the course take place?

The location will be confirmed shortly. Previous editions have been hosted at UK university venues and professional settings aligned with the academic and collaborative nature of the course.

How do I register interest for future dates?

If bookings for the current course are closed or you’d like early access to future editions, you can register your interest via the form here.
